Not unexpectedly this new Telarc disc has warm, full sound, yet with refined detail, and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra plays with much finesse. Lopez-Cobos's opening is bright-eyed and robust, but there no lack of elegance.

The 'Villanella' of the First Suite has some delightful oboe playing and again at the opening of the Second where, following the briskly spirited 'Danza rustica', a touchingly elegant melancholy permeates the 'Campanae parisiensis'. The woodwind are very engagingly light of heart in the closing 'Bergamasca'. 3, for strings alone, opens most gracefully with translucent textures, even if Lopez-Cobos does not quite catch the haunting, bitter-sweet sense of nostalgia for the distant past, that makes the Dorati/Philharmonia Hungarica version (currently reissued on Mercury (CD) 434 304-2MM) so memorable.

But that disc does not include the Trittico botticelliano, which is a distinct asset on the Telarc issue. The opening evocation of spring brings an extravagantly coloured woodwind display; a sense of life bursting out, with luminous trillings and the morning light reflected in the glowing strings; the central 'Adoration of the Magi' with its familiar carol interpolation is wistfully serene, while the closing picture of 'The birth of Venus' has a glowingly rapt burgeoning of expansive ecstasy, very sensuously Italianite in feeling.

The Lausanne woodwind playing is really distinguished in this work and the glowing ambience of the Musica Theatre of La-Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland is agreeably flattering in the best possible sense. -- Ivan March, Gramophone Works on This Recording. Light listening, not very ancient.

2.5 stars March 26, 2015 By L Wayne F. (Edmonton, Alberta) 'I purchased this CD expecting to hear authentic ancient music played on period instruments. What is actually the case is a modern chamber orchestra playing music from around the 16th century. The music is nice, if a bit formula driven, sounding a lot like the score to a movie based on a Medieval theme.
